Spaced repetition and FSRS, explained simply

Spaced repetition schedules a review near the time you are likely to need it, instead of showing every card every day. FSRS is a modern scheduling approach that estimates how stable each memory is from your review history.

Why spacing works

A new memory is fragile, so its first intervals are short. Each successful recall provides evidence that the memory can survive a longer gap. Difficult cards return sooner; stable cards can wait longer.

This reduces unnecessary reviews while keeping attention on material at risk of being forgotten. The goal is not a perfect streak. The goal is an efficient cycle of recall, feedback, and rescheduling.

What FSRS uses

FSRS updates a card from your review outcome and its previous history. In practical terms, the scheduler needs an honest signal: did you forget, struggle, recall normally, or answer easily?

The exact interval can differ between cards that were created on the same day. That is expected because their histories and difficulty are not identical.

Grade consistently

Choose the grade that describes recall before revealing the answer. Do not choose “easy” only because the answer looks familiar after you see it. Consistent grading gives the scheduler better information.

  • Again: you could not recall the answer.
  • Hard: you recalled it with serious effort or uncertainty.
  • Good: you recalled it correctly with normal effort.
  • Easy: recall was immediate and the card is clearly overlearned.

Build a sustainable habit

Finish due reviews before adding a large batch of new cards. A small daily routine keeps the queue predictable. If the workload grows too quickly, reduce new cards and improve troublesome prompts.

Scheduling cannot repair poor content by itself. Clear cards, active recall, honest grading, and regular review work together.
